Your front door is the first thing anyone sees — and a tired, faded or peeling door drags down the whole look of your home. A crisp, freshly painted door is one of the cheapest, fastest ways to lift your kerb appeal. At Original Dublin Painter, we repaint and respray front doors, internal doors and garage doors right across Dublin, with a smooth, hard-wearing finish that looks like it came from a factory.
Doors we paint
We work with every common door type in Irish homes:
- Timber front doors — stripped, filled, sanded and repainted or resprayed for a flawless finish, with the grain and mouldings kept crisp.
- uPVC and composite doors — cleaned, keyed and coated with specialist paints that bond to plastic and won’t peel.
- Internal doors — panel doors, flush doors and period doors sprayed or brushed to a smooth, even finish that ties a hallway together.
- Garage and side doors — up-and-over, timber and metal garage doors brought back to life in a colour that matches your home.
Composite and uPVC door painting
Composite and uPVC doors fade, especially on a south-facing porch, and plenty of people assume they’re stuck with the colour. They aren’t. A composite or uPVC door can be painted or resprayed, but not with ordinary gloss. We clean off the grime and any silicone residue, give the surface a light key, apply a bonding primer made for plastics and GRP skins, then finish with a flexible exterior topcoat that won’t crack as the door expands and contracts. Handles, letterbox, glazing and seals are taken off or masked so the finish is clean right to the edges.
Doors and windows together
If the front door is tired, the window frames usually are too. We paint timber sash and casement windows and respray uPVC frames, sills and fascias, so the door and windows can be done in one visit and in matching colours. See our exterior and interior spray painting page for more on uPVC window spraying.
A finish that lasts
A door takes more punishment than almost any other surface in your home — sun, rain, slamming and daily use. That’s why prep matters. We wash off dirt and grease, sand back flaking paint, fill any splits or dents, prime bare areas and then apply a minimum of two coats of a durable, weather-resistant finish. Where a truly smooth, brush-mark-free result is wanted, we spray the door in controlled conditions. The result is a door that looks immaculate and stays that way for years.
Colour advice included
Not sure what colour suits your house? We’re happy to advise. A deep navy, a classic black, a warm sage or a bold red can completely change the character of a property — and we’ll help you pick a shade that works with your brick, render and windows. Colour consultation comes as standard with every quote.

FAQs
Can you paint a composite front door?
Yes. A composite door needs a thorough clean, a light key and a primer that bonds to the GRP or plastic skin, followed by a flexible exterior topcoat. Painted that way it holds up well. Painted straight over with standard gloss, it will peel within a year or two.
How long does it take to paint a front door?
A single front door is usually a one-day job, prep included. You can close and lock it the same day, but treat it gently for a week or two while the paint hardens fully, so keep the letterbox flap and the edges free of knocks and don’t scrub it.
Do you spray front doors or paint them by brush?
Both. For a factory-smooth, brush-mark-free finish we spray, which is ideal on panelled timber, composite and uPVC doors. For some period timber doors a well-laid brush finish suits the character better. We’ll recommend the right method when we see the door.
How much does it cost to paint a front door in Dublin?
It depends on the door type, its condition and how much prep it needs: stripping flaking paint off an old timber door takes far longer than keying a composite one. We price every door after a free look at it. Many customers add the front door to a wider exterior job, and our house painting cost guide shows typical figures for a full exterior.
What’s the best paint for a front door?
For timber, a quality exterior primer and undercoat followed by an exterior gloss or satin made for doors and trim. For composite and uPVC, a bonding primer and a flexible coating designed for plastics. In both cases the paint matters less than the prep under it.
